What comes after 2?

Weblogs Inc. founder Jason Calcanis has started a bit of a debate with his official definition of Web 3.0 as:

“the creation of high-quality content and services produced by gifted individuals using Web 2.0 technology as an enabling platform.”?

The post has the who’s who of the web chiming in to offer their angle on the discussion. With 55 comments on the original blog post, The Guardian’s Jemima Kiss suggesting the world isn’t quite in touch with 2.0 yet, and digital media guru Jeremy Toeman arguing that the next big wave for the web is all about access, Calcanis has certainly struck a nerve.

The blogosphere is constantly being labelled as self-referential, and it’s easy to see why - no surprise then, that two of the words used most often in blogs are “blogger” and “blog”. It seems that we’re happiest, and most vocal, when we’re using social media to discuss social media. Incidentally, as others have noted, the ”official” definition of Web 3.0 pays heed to Mahalo, the world’s first human-powered search engine, which should be an interesting project to watch.
