A great piece on e-Consultancy today discussing whether web experts i.e “geeks” can make good marketers in the web 2.0 communication space. The article suggests that moving on from an era of more art-based marketing, in recent years there’s been too great a focus on science due to advancing technology, which doesn’t necessarily translate into good marketing practice.
In my opinion, while it’s true to some extent that the simplicity of web 2.0 technology enables both “geeks” and “non geeks” to execute marketing campaigns, trivializing marketing as a discipline in it’s entirety is unfair. Savvy marketers increasingly leverage web 2.0 tools in effective marketing and PR practice, so I agree that good marketing is about combining both art and science.
The profile of the geek marketer has already been discussed by Steve Rubel of Micro Persuasion – “cross-trained specialists who are fluent in both worlds”?, whilst Inovis also talks about the advantages of being a geek marketer.
Well, enough said about geek marketers, how about geek musicians? A recent social network phenomenon called GeekPop08 proves that geeks can too strum guitars and sing inventive scipop ballads. Go and check them out!
