2008 – Our most read stories

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Well it’s getting towards the end of the year, so I thought I’d take a look to see what we’ve covered here at Shiny Red in 2008. It’s been a big year for global politics, economy and culture, and we were there for the elections (and these), the Olympics as well as the less serious end of social media.

The work we’ve been doing has been varied as well – from education and finance, to FMCG, travel, consumer technology, and healthcare – so many industries are now taking a much more positive and in depth look at how they interact with their audiences online.

So it’s no surprise that our top ten most read stories this year is as varied as our team and work is here. Spanning FDA reports, Guardian gap year bloggers, Burlesque meetups, and - of course – social media’s success story of 2008: Twitter. So here it is, we’ve had a great year and will be posting more wrap-up stories all this week.

  1. Max Gogarty ““ Enough to make Perez and Gawker envious
  2. Social media and brands in 2009
  3. 10 blogs to read in 2008
  4. New website: iwantgreatcare.org
  5. Burlesque bloggers, champagne and oysters
  6. Blogging don’t need a full story to make a good story
  7. FDA report shows healthcare blogs are as influential as traditional media
  8. Who goes? You decide: Revels’ new ad
  9. Caring and sharing is key to unlocking events’ full potential
  10. To twitter or not to twitter

Unbranded Honda ad blog and more

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I do read other blogs I promise, but there were a bunch of interesting links on Brand Republic this morning:

  • Unbranded Honda ads: See below for the clever new unbranded adverts for Honda from Wieden and Kennedy (who have a great agency blog). The adverts lead you to the Diffcult is worth doing blog charting the making of the new Honda commercial. So they’re basically neat teaser clips for the upcoming ad. I think this is fab, it’s transparent, fun, interesting content that makes the viewer read on and investigate, it should drive great pre-ad buzz:
  • This week’s top 10 top 10s

    Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

    The blog world is full of top 10s so here are 10 “Top 10s” that have caught my eye over the last few days;

E-consultancy’s 10 things Tesco could do better online  – This appears to be part of an interesting series where they choose a company as a case study and make insightful suggestions to improve their sites.

Futurelab’s 10 ways digital can help you thrive in a recession - With all the buzz surrounding the credit crunch, I think we should all put this in our pocket’s for the future!

ClickZ’s 10 reasons why marketers should pay attention to Wikipedia - A nice blog post highlighting why wiki’s should be embraced rather than feared.

Marketing Vox’s Top 10 US social networks and blog site rankings ”“ It is always good to keep an eye on the top social networking sites of the time. Anyone who works in this industry will agree that you need to keep on your toes with news like this!

Brand Republic’s Consumer’s top 10 brands - I am not sure what this says about the public, as the results show that alcohol and pop music dominate the British public’s top Irish brands?!

Functioning Form’s Top 10 lessons learned in e-commerce  – A nice summary from Tony Hsieh’s seminar at SxSW about the evolution of the Zappos brand

Conversation Agent’s Top 10 sin’s of agencies – all noted by Shiny Red!

    Gawker’s Top 10 fake celebrity blogs – I couldn’t resist a Gawker post!

Personal budget training’s 10 tips before you buy a gift card - I can’t believe there are even 10 things that we need to think about before buying a gift card!

Webgrrls wisdom’s Top 10 up and comming cities – published in a blog purely about Top 10s!

I really like top 10 posts, not because I would take the top 10 as an exhaustive list, but because they provide a hub holding together information on a particular subject and can give you a starting point for research in the area.  However, I am not sure if having 10 things that I need to consider before buying a gift card is taking this to the extreme!

Shiny Red and the Essence of Lurve

    Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Unless you have been in hiding, you will know that today is Valentine’s day. This day typically divides the population into two sectors ““ those in a relationship and those who aren’t. Here’s some handy links to help both camps:

For smug couples, community reviews site Trusted Places is a great resource for those who have left it a little late to book their dinner venue to squeeze into place that is backed by a good review. Veronica Belmont’s blog on Mahalo has a helpful resource on how to speak French and woo your partner while MSN music has helpfully gathered together a selection of romantic music available to download to help create the right atmosphere.

Singletons can be happy in the money they are saving on this day. If you are looking for love but are looking for someone that may fall in the “˜niche’ sector, Mashable compiled a great list of dating sites for “˜geeks and freaks’ or if your slightly more mainstream, you may want to take advantage of the networking sites such as Meet up who have arranged events for singles to mingle tonight.

Whichever category you fall into, this cute viral Valentines video from Marmite will make you smile!

10 blogs to read in 2008

    Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

At Shiny Red, we’re always trying to expand our reading list. This time of year provides a good opportunity to look through your RSS feeds, your blogroll and your favourites lists and make some sense of it all. Technorati is currently tracking 112.8 million blogs, and our friends at Shiny Media are running 45, so it’s impossible to read everything that’s being posted. While it’s easy to stick to the superblogs like TechCrunch and Boing Boing, there are some gems that can go unnoticed. Here are 10 that you might not be checking out… yet:

A Contribution to the Great Debate - Channel 4’s online reporter Ben King fuses new media and UK politics in his personal blog

BusinessGreen Blog - With environmental and ethical issues set among 2008’s biggest blog topics, BusinessGreen talks to brands looking to make a difference

Core77 - One of the many uber-hip design blogs; a source of creative inspiration and great images

Fake Plastic Noodles - US-based PR blogger Melanie Seasons shares interesting thoughts on social media to add to her interesting blog name

James Cridland’s Blog - While radio may be perceived by many as not having a place in the internet revolution, James Cridland, BBC’s future media guru, expertly provides insight into its convergence with new media platforms

Journalism.co.uk – Editor’s blog - Though its labelled as a site for journalists, Oliver Luft and Laura Oliver scour the media world for stories, ranging from mobile video to bloggers joining the NUJ, that have relevance far beyond Fleet Street

Marketing Blagger –  As well as running this internet marketing blog, Andy Bargery organises The London Bloggers Meetup group

New Media Knowledge – A hub for digital media professionals in the UK complete with news and events; it’s not-for-profit and runs for the benefit of the industry it covers

Practising a Proper Social Demeanour: A Guide To Facebook Etiquette - If 2007 was the year that Facebook took-off, then Maz Hardey’s blog promises to raise more laughs in 2008 as the boundaries blur between off and online worlds

Who Ate All The Pies - Yes, it is a Shiny Media blog, but as the tagline says, it’s simply the best football blog on the planet.

    2007 – A year in headlines

    Friday, December 21st, 2007

We’re about to switch off the Shiny Red lights for the year and head home for the Christmas break. But before we do, we’re taking a chance to look at the last 12 months on the web and pick out some of our favourite stories from 2007.

The significance of Time magazine choosing ‘You’ as the person of the year for ‘06 has echoed throughout the web this year, with Facebook exploding into the mainstream and YouTube, MySpace, Bebo and Wikipedia all featuring in traffic ranking site Alexa’s top UK destinations. What’s more, the UK is leading the digital race in Europe with 34% of Brits regularly using social networking sites to connect with friends, and 8 out of 10 users streaming video online. So while looking forward to a strong 2008 with ever increasing opportunities for brands to communicate online, here’s a quick look at what caught our eye this year.

    January: Joost launches in Beta
    February: BitTorrent goes legal
March: Blogging “fad” questioned - celebs are stuck for words
April: Google buys online ads company Doubleclick for $3.1 billion
May: Companies lay down strict blogging policies
June: London 2012 logo sparks debate and ridicule online
July: Facebook boom with users up 89%
    August: Fake Steve Jobs outed
September: Wikipedia reaches two million articles
October: Microsoft buys $15bn stake in Facebook
    November: iPhone fever hits UK
    December: BBC launches personalised homepage
